Innovation in food packaging: Magic featured in Nonwovens Industry Magazine

We are pleased to share that Magic SpA was featured in the in the December issue of Nonwovens Industry, the international magazine dedicated to the nonwovens sector.

The article “Sustainable solutions in food packaging” explores the role nonwoven materials are playing in the development of new food packaging solutions.

Nonwovens are increasingly used in food packaging thanks to their versatility and their ability to provide functional properties that help protect product quality and freshness.

Magic produces absorbent pads for food packaging

Magic SpA specialises in absorbent pads for food packaging, particularly for fresh products such as meat, fish and berries.

One of the key materials used in these applications is Airgel g-grade, an airlaid certified OK Compost Industrial used as the absorbent core of food pads.

Luca Lavazza, Magic’s R&D Manager, explains that the material supports the preservation of fresh food by absorbing and retaining liquids inside the tray, helping maintain a cleaner presentation of the packaged product. Its industrial compostability certification also defines a specific end-of-life characteristic for applications in fresh food packaging.

Magic’s airlaid materials are mainly cellulose-based and incorporate Spongel, a superabsorbent powder certified OK Compost Industrial, designed to provide high liquid absorption and retention within a short time.

Lavazza adds:

The multilayer structure of the pads helps retain liquids within the core, creating a barrier that can reduce the need for additives and preservatives.
The material also helps improve the visual presentation of packaged food by limiting liquid pooling and condensation, making the product more appealing at the point of sale.

Certifications and end-of-life features

Lavazza explains.

Through R&D and process optimisation, our aim is to develop packaging solutions with end-of-life characteristics defined according to the specific product.
Consumers and retailers are increasingly looking for packaging solutions that can help extend freshness and that come with clearly defined end-of-life characteristics. There is strong interest in compostable or recyclable pads, as well as in materials that can help reduce food waste by extending the shelf life of fresh products. Transparent information about material characteristics is also becoming more influential in purchasing decisions, encouraging manufacturers to rely on specific certifications.
