AIRGEL G-GRADE

There’s something new at Magic: Airgel g-grade, the airlaid certified OK Compost Industrial by TÜV Austria for industrial composting.

What does compostability mean?

It is the ability of an organic material to be converted into compost through the composting process. Composting makes use of the biodegradability of the organic materials being treated, generally waste, which are broken down and biodegraded in the presence of oxygen. Mature compost has a soil-like appearance and, because of its organic matter content, is used in agriculture as a soil improver.

The introduction of this new absorbent material is the latest stage in Magic’s work on absorbent materials certified for industrial composting.

Many hours of R&D, along with significant prior expertise, led to an important milestone in 2015 when work on Spongel, the superabsorbent powder, began and would later certified OK Compost Industrial by TUV Austria.

The production plant was subsequently developed and equipped for the manufacture of advanced absorbent materials. This was an important step in the work that eventually led to Airgel g-grade  and to the development of a new type of airlaid material.

Until then, absorbent materials generally relied on thermoplastic fibres and, in many cases, chemical finishes. Magic’s new airlaid uses fibres from renewable sources.

Magic’s CEO Mauro Giani comments:

We are proud to have obtained OK Compost certification for Airgel g-grade as well. Environmental certifications make it possible to identify characteristics that have been verified by an independent body. In the case of Airgel g-grade, industrial compostability has been certified.
I believe that companies today have an important role and responsibility in protecting the environment.

Airgel g-grade can be used in a wide range of applications, from food and agriculture to medical, hygiene and personal care products.

R&D Manager Luca Lavazza remarks:

Developing this structure certified for industrial composting required many hours of research and development. The objective was clear from the start; finding the right way to achieve it was more difficult. Over time, however, we built up considerable know-how and, thanks to a strong team, the sharing of our expertise and a great deal of enthusiasm, we got there. That is a real source of satisfaction.
