Safety Walks: what we look at when we talk about safety

Workplace safety also depends on what happens every day, before an accident occurs.

Day-to-day work can reveal unsafe conditions, situations that require attention or procedures that may need to be reviewed. Recognising and reporting them gives us a chance to act before they lead to more serious consequences.

This is why Magic has introduced Safety Walks: structured visits to working areas involving colleagues from different departments.

During a Safety Walk, participants observe the workplace, the activities being carried out and the way tasks are performed, and discuss their observations as they go. The focus is on the situation, not the person: reporting an irregularity or a near miss helps us understand what happened and the conditions that allowed it to occur.

The observations made during each visit are recorded and, where necessary, lead to corrective actions. This gives each report a practical follow-up and allows the issues identified to be addressed.

Bringing together people from different departments also creates room to share experience and good practices. What works well in one area may prove useful elsewhere, while someone from another department may notice aspects of the work that are less apparent to those who deal with them every day.

Safety Walks are part of Magic’s existing prevention activities, alongside procedures, personal protective equipment and other safety measures. They offer a closer look at how work is carried out and the conditions in which it takes place.
