Funded Projects

Magic Spa has undertaken and developed a project entitled “Da risorse naturali a materiali innovativi ecosostenibili: compositi multifunzionali, per applicazioni nel settore dell’imballaggio alimentare (EcoMAT).”

The project is funded under the Accordi per l’innovazione DM 24/05/2017 programme for a total amount of €1,326,780.80, including €190,742.00 provided by Regione PIEMONTE in the form of a direct contribution to expenditure under Axis I, “Rafforzare la ricerca, lo sviluppo tecnologico e l’innovazione”, Action I.1.b.1.1 “Valorizzazione economica dell’innovazione attraverso la sperimentazione e l’adozione di soluzioni innovative nei processi, nei prodotti e delle formule organizzative, nonché attraverso il finanziamento dell’industrializzazione dei risultati della ricerca”, of the Programma Operativo Regionale FESR 2014-2020.

The project is aimed at developing food packaging based on new materials and multifunctional composites. It includes research into the structure and production technology of antimicrobial pads containing bio-composites. The project objectives include the development and assessment of new packaging solutions, also in relation to their biodegradability and compostability characteristics. The project focuses on the development of new products made from innovative organic-inorganic polymeric materials of natural origin, which may incorporate active substances with antimicrobial, antioxidant and antifungal properties. These materials are intended for use in active packaging designed to increase the shelf life of food products. The project also includes the development of new polymeric materials for packaging applications, for which biodegradability and compostability characteristics are also taken into consideration, drawing on the specific expertise acquired through the collaboration with Termoplast.

The project is supported by university research carried out by two institutions with recognised international standing: the local Dipartimento di Scienze della Salute dell’Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale di Novara and the Dipartimento di Chimica dell’Università degli Studi Aldo Moro di Bari. The project is expected to have a significant impact on the country’s manufacturing system, helping to strengthen its leading position in the packaging sector not only at European level, but also worldwide.

In particular, the project falls within the Key Enabling Technologies identified by the Horizon 2020 programme in the field of advanced materials. Development will take place within the “Aree tematiche della Strategia nazionale”, and specifically within “Industria intelligente e sostenibile”, with the aim of supporting competitiveness in food packaging as well as in related sectors such as hygiene, medical and cosmetics.
